Great news for mobile users in Nigeria! The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has brought in a new system for USSD codes, making things much easier for everyone. Before, each network had its own special codes. But now, thanks to the NCC’s direction, all networks will use the same codes by May 17, 2023.

The New Unified USSD Codes:

Here are the new USSD codes that the NCC has introduced:

  • NIN: *996#
  • VAS: *305#
  • Share services: *321#
  • Account Balance: *310#
  • Data plans: *312#
  • Airtime recharge: *311#
  • Borrowing services: *303#
  • Data balance: *323#

Not all networks have fully changed to these codes yet. For example, MTN uses all the codes except for data plans, and Airtel uses all except for airtime recharge. But soon, all networks are expected to make these changes.

Understanding Unified USSD Codes:

USSD stands for Unstructured Supplementary Service Data. It’s a special way to do things on your phone, like checking airtime or getting extra services. The best part is, you don’t even need the internet!

Before, every service had its own code. Like, putting more airtime in needed a different code than checking how much airtime you have left. But now, thanks to the NCC, you can use the same code for both MTN and Airtel!

Benefits of Unified USSD Codes:

The NCC has wanted this change since 2017. They say it will help us a lot. One big help is that we won’t need to remember lots of codes anymore. And once everyone uses the same codes, there might be even more good things coming our way. Like, companies can use the old codes for new things, and that makes them compete with each other to give us better services!

But, there might be some small problems. Companies need to change their machines to use the new codes, and some people might get a bit confused during the change. But in the end, it’s all for making things better for us.

No Changes for Banking:

Even though the codes are changing, our banking stays the same. The NCC says banks should keep using their old codes because it might be hard for us if they change. So, don’t worry! You can still use your bank like before.

Conclusion:

This new way of using USSD codes in Nigeria is a big step forward. It makes things much easier for us, and it helps companies compete to give us even better services. The NCC worked hard to make this happen, and it’s all for us to have a smoother time using our phones. And remember, your banking stays just as it is. So, get ready to enjoy the new USSD codes and have an even better mobile experience in Nigeria!
